Answer : hi everyone! Thanks for submitting. Both Julia and me have MS in computer sciences but having an MS does not mean you are an expert in every single programming language of the world :) We have just created the forums, and with time we're gonna improve it. Anyway, I'm Hammad and like Julia I have also stammered all my life. I still stammer, but with a lot of help I get from Julia and other recovering stammerers, I do have more control over my speech now. So it's all about being a team and supporting each other. About me I am from Rawalpindi, and you already know about my profession. And the person who created the forum, please introduce yourself as well. Thanks.

You guys ROCK....:)...I am rather i was a stammer in my chilldhood and i know the radicule one has to face about this problem. But luckily, by Allah's will i met an angel in shape of my class teacher class XI who councelled me and my parents and instucted them to give me more attention and care out of the rest three sons. I think becuase of his guidence and my parents changed behaviour (My father is retired Brigadier) i progress remarkebly well and now i can claim that i have over come this problem 95 percent for sure. I always give advice or try to help any one i see in this perplex situation. Let me tell all stammering is curable.100 percent. I am a living proof of it. You just have to hang in there and work on it. NEVER SAY NO. More over its a continous process. You can expect over night result. Lastly, if ican be any help please email me or call me. Answer : Yesterday I saw the interview of Julia Irani on the Dawn news channel. Not only was I impressed at her own efforts of overcoming her stammering problem, but also realising that so many people are faced with the same ordeal and creating a forum forum got them to help each other. My son, who will be 10 years old very soon has this problem. Although he is very bright and intelligent, this shortcoming of his gives an opportunity to other kids ridicule him. I would be very grateful if I could be part of this group so that I can help my son. I live in Karachi, and would like to participate in any activity of this group in Karachi....... A desperate Mom.

Answer : Dear Qamar, It's so wonderful to hear from you. Parents play such an important role in a child's life, especially one that stammers. I'd be happy to speak with you on the phone or meet with you one evening perhaps for a chat. We've also started support group meetings in Karachi. in fact we had our first meeting on the 25th, and we hope to invite parents, educators, and employers to attend some of these to give you a better understanding for what its all about and how you can help. It's so encouraging to see a parent take such a proactive approach towards it, and right off the bat, I'd like to say that a stammer doesn't have to hold your son back from achieving anything in life. It's nothing to be ashamed of, and if you can instill that in him at a young age, there's nothing like it. :) I'll add you to my mailing list and keep you posted on the activities of the Karachi chapter. Also if you'd like to get in touch with me, please feel free to email me anytime at j.irani@pakistanstammering.org Thank you so much! Julia

Answer : Hi Qamar, it's so good to see your concern about your son's stammering. It's good for you that you live in Karachi, as you can get help from Julia there and attend the support groups with your son. I have been on a speech recovery programme in UK and there was a 12 year old kid, and was showing great progress towards his speech. So it is possible for your son to gain control over his stammering at this age. I hope support group sessions would be able to help him out. Julia is doing great, and I am sure she would be able to help you. Thanks for your interest and stay in touch. :)

I keenly look forward to the support group sessions in Karachi. God bless you

Answer : Dear All, I think its a wonderful step and in the right direction too. Being a healthcare professional I know all too well how difficult stammering can be especially when people look up to you. Theres that extra pressure to deliver every word wihtout any discontinuation. Where people listen to your every word and action. Well, im here and i hope to meet more people with the same problem. Perhaps we could all sit together and help each other out. (PS: something like this happening in lahore anytime soon?)

But as more and more people join us, it is possible to spread our support network all across pakistan. But it would definitely take some time. Take care and stay in touch!

Answer : Hello, All! To those of you who don't know me, my name is Madison Garcia and I am based here in the United States, with most of my work in the area of Communication Disorders having been with the National Stuttering Association (NSA), also based in America. I have founded and led a number of support groups, and happen to be a stammerer myself. :) I warmly welcome you all to the Pakistan Stammering Association, and thank you for all of your posts...you seem like a very enthusiastic and gracious group! If only I were currently in Pakistan, so that I could have the pleasure of meeting all of you in person...! Maybe someday, until then...I will do absolutely everything I am able from afar. :) Remember always, that there IS hope...and that becoming comfortable and accepting of our stuttering is key. Only then, can we take the necessary steps forward in treating it...freedom from shame and denial, and the adoption of a new outlook on ourselves and the scope of life. Don't let anything hold you back, and I would go as far to say, that stammering enables you to movew FORWARD... Step by step, we're in this together and I encourage you to share your stammering with others as well... Everyone has difficulty in some area of life, and we may as well LIVE to help make this life a little easier for eachother. :) Keep smiling... Many Blessings, Your new friend and fellow stammerer, Madison

The support groups provide you a chance to speak, without any fear or embarresment. So stay in touch and probably you will be on one of our support groups any time soon.

Answer : Hi mohsin, I appreciate your concerns about your speech. I just want to say that stammering cannot be cured, yet it can be controlled. No matter how much control you have on your speech, you can't be a fluent speaker. May be you will seem fluent to most listeners but in the back of your mind you will still have this feeling that you are managing your words. So, let's focus on managing our words rather than trying to be fluent. Take care

Answer : Salam & Hi everybody. I know it kind of took me very long but i would like to congratulate Julia for speaking so wonderfully on "the first blast". I really think she deserves lots of credit for the boldness she showed by accepting her stammering on national television. I am an engineer and work in the telecommunication industry. I myself faced the same problem 7-8 years ago and was fortunate enough to get help back then. Since, i havent looked back. During my 4 years in engineering i was fortunate enough to find myself in way more public speaking scenerios then normal and i have to say i did a pretty good job. I remember having the worst possible few years when i just couldnt manufaction a decent conversation and was very low on self esteem. But beleive me all those who are facing this problem, its solveable to a very high degree. I think the initiative taken by you people is gr8 and iwould like to be part of it. As i think Julia also rightly mentioned in the interview that to aviod relapse we all need to revisit all that helped us control our speech. SO lets help eachother!! PS: Anybody can call me (03008321003) or mail me as well and i would try to be as helpful as possible.

Answer : Hi Atif, Thanks for posting on our website. We hope to get something started in Lahore as well. If one person would like to attend Hammad's meeting in Islamabad, and go back and start a separate chapter in Lahore, that would be fantastic. The thing with these meetings is that there isn't a fixed structure - the general goal is to get people to talk. Also, every meeting will shape itself and different people may want something different out of the meetings - so eventually I'm sure there will be multiple meetings in each city ... with a focus that interests those attending. Thanks for joining our team! :) Julia

Answer : Hi Ahsan, Thanks for your post! Well, you've taken the first big step - wanting to help yourself and asking about how! That's the right attitude and truly half the battle won! :) What has helped me is a combination of things: I pause, take a deep breath, then speak, release all the remaining air, pause and breath again. If someone asks me a question, I try to first pause - I try not to rush into answering the question. It is tough - but that is something that really helps when I do it. Then you just have to talk talk talk as much as you can. Every chance you get, this of it as practice time for talking. If phone calls are tough( like they are for me ), make a bunch of calls to for eg, hotels and ask for teh price of accommodation. Just anything to use as practice. try and resist your desire to email or sms someone instead of calling them. make it a sport and have fun practicing. :) Julia

I have done my Bachelors in Computer Sciences and MBA in finance from SZABIST,Karachi.I've had the same problems like the most of you. But with the grace of God I have control over my speech. But I do tend to repeat words, a word of advice for you all please increase your circle of friends the more you talk the more you tend to improve. Take every situation as a challenge and repeat in your head that you can do this. Don't undermine yourself, appreciate yourself. Before talking take a deep breath and then speak, never talk when running out of breath, this increases the chances of stammering. Well we all know that, just a reminder :)

Answer : Hi Tabinda, its good to read your post. People like you are proof to other stammerers that it IS possible to control your speech, rather than "curing" it. You have got a very clear picture of the breathing cycle - breath and breath more to manage your words. I think breathing is the basic and one of the most important part of your speech. Once you have got it right other things starts to get easier. Hopefully you'll be interested in joining the support groups in Karachi. Thanks for your post and keep moving forward!

My first advice to all of you would be to pray to Allah to cure your problem. Nothing is possible without HIS help. and then afterwards, do what our pundits (hammad and julia) ask us to do. I had this oral exam and the examiner called me in and he asked me of my name and I said 'my name is zzzzahra jassani' then he asked me to repeat and i repeated and again he asekd me to repeat and i repeated again. Before he started the question answersing session I made it clear to him that I stutter and that i'd be having problem speaking so then he was like 'yeah its ok, just be comfortable and relax' and then he started asking me questions and I stuttered on almost every word but I didn't feel guily and I was confident and it didn't felt like my heart is gonna explode. I got one answer wrong but who cares. lol! I was confident and I stuttered confidently and I felt so much better. Thats when I realized that there is hope for me. Be open about your stammer and don't let it bother you - say whatever you want to, whenever you want to, no matter how long it takes you! What a fine example you are Zahra, I'm sure many will gain inspiration from your story! :) Thanks for sharing! Julia

Answer : Hi, this is Junaid Hussain, I'm an engineer working in an IT industry and currently living in Tripoli, Libya. My stammering has always been a big nightmare for me and I admit a lot of my talent got wasted just because of this fear of stammering. I've recently had a couple of speech therapy sessions, and now I feel quite comfortable about my stammering. I like discussing about it with people. I still have this fear thing inside me, like avoiding talking on phone, asking direction to some place from somebody if I'm lost, public speaking, etc but overall I feel much better now. And Hats off to Julia, you simply rocked in the show. I will be really glad to become a part of PSA.

It truly is nothing to be ashamed of, talk about it to the world, and keep challenging yourself to do the things you avoid! It's the only way to overcome our fears. Cheers! Julia :)

Answer : Hi Asim, Yes, absolutely, you can have control over your speech and actually enjoy speaking! That is definitely possible. However, that takes time, and theres isn't a magic pill for it - so if you have the right attitude, you can have the world at your feet! :) Glad to have you on board! I'll add you to our mailing list - one is a general one that has ALL members, and on is a karachi one where I'll send you weekly reminders about our local meetings. our next meeting is actually tomorrow at 10am, Avari Towers. Welcome! :) Julia

When it comes to speak to an audience, my speech gets worse, I face prolonged speech blocks and cant initiate the second word. I atneded a therapy at AgaKhan Hospital for 3 months. I was taught several strategies for fluency but i couldnt implement them in daily life. Im helpless. God bless those who are working for the sake of stammerers.

Answer : Well, i have visiting this forum silently since the Julia's interview on DAWN NEWS and it is really positive to see the response. I would like to introduce my self.. Well, I am also a PWS (and i don,t feel good in mentioning this), Age 24 and have MS in Software Engineering. A man knows him/her self very well and i know that i can be among top ten in all the aspects of life, but this stammering thing has made my life hell. Can u imagine a the feeling when i could not answer my roll call in school, cillege and university life, I could not order to a canteen boy to bring some thing to eat for me, I could not talk on phone, I could not even share my feeling with brothers and sisters..... the list is endless and each time it made me feel that i letting my parents down and even more i was destroying my self; NO one can imagine.. I survived through all , thinking and praying to ALMIGHTY ALLAH that it might end on some day. But now i realize that some times GOD forgets some one.. Today my life is all set for a disaster. After doing my MS in Software Engineering, I am doing job as computer operator in a general Store on just 5500 RS per month. just because i could not talk in interviews and i could not justify my A Grades.. Can you imagine a Hawk with broken wings... thats me ... full of potential but a looser with capital L ... Day by day the feeling is getting on me that I have nothing in this world......... Hmmmmmm..... i am sorry i can't continue to tell u the my miserable story cause it is useless now.... I was just wanted to tell that every one is not like Julia or Hammad or Tabinda.. I do also exist...

Answer : Dear 'broken wings', Thanks for posting on our website - I apologize for my slow response - I'm guilty of not visiting our website in a while - and it's so easy to brush over these old forum topics. Apologies. Your message here is honest, real and very candid - I thank you for sharing your story with us. There are many many out there who feel just like you do, and they don't speak up. So, I'm so excited that you did. It's so often that I hear people say "oh you only have a stammer, other people have so much worse" - what people don't realize is that emotionally stammering is one of the toughest disabilities to deal with - because socially it is OK to ridicule a stutter. There are several comedies out there that have a person who stutters to add humour to the show. It really hits home when you speak about your struggles with your career. Yes, I do have a great job now that I love - but I too spent over a year being unemployed, and I know the feeling where hope is lost and you're frustrated because you know there is so much you can do - yet life keeps slapping you in the face due to your stammer. My friend, never in my wildest dreams did I see myself coming on TV and speaking - that to, to speak about stammering in front of the world. Couple of years ago, if anyone suggested that, i would say "ARE YOU CRAZY!" This was not my vision for myself ever. But life works in mysterious ways and here I am. :) I know we are all different and have unique personalities - yet i don't think we are that different either. I don't have any super powers or courage or confidence that you don't have within you already - it just needs to be brought out - and I had the help of some wonderful people in my life who helped me change my life. So, don't give up. I would love to talk to you more - please e-mail me, if you want. Are you based in karachi? Hope to hear from you! warm regards, Julia

Answer : Dear Broken Wings - like Julia I would also like to apologize for late response. I read your post and believe me, you're NOT the only one who's going through this phase. I have personally experienced the kind of situation like yours. Even after getting a postgraduate degree from England I struggled when I came back and seeked a job. I also went for some interviews and was rejected, and I think that was mainly because of my speech. After some months I got a job in a software company and since then I am there. But I just want to tell you, that we all know the feeling! We really do! As Julia said, we are not super humans or something. I also used to struggle while answering my roll call, ordering something in a cafe (and I still do). But I just don't pressurize myself anymore even if I stutter. I just LET IT GO! And that's what you need to do. You just need to stop worrying about your stammer because the more you try to be fluent, the more stammer you will face. So just ignore the situations when you stammer. You have to gain confidence, and you can do that with the help of other PWS. Where are you located in Pakistan? May be you can join us on our support group meetings. I would love to hear from you. If you want to have a chat, email me and may be we can talk on phone. Hope to hear from you soon!

Answer : Dear Juila and Hammad, thank you very much for positive words.... I am surrently settled in Lahore. I really want to get out of this disastrous situation. I fully understand the "Feel the fear and do it anyway", but just one moment of stammering destroys the whole confidence and mental approach. There are so many 'Ethical Enfants' who seem to come into this world just to make fun.I was criticised and target of fun by those who are less than me in case of ethical values, mental approach and attitude and that things slapps much. There were many times when i cried; " O, GOD, why me....!"... My parents used to tell me about Hazrat Bilal and Hazrat Musa and say that when Allah gives some one extra qualities, He makes them stammer so that " Loug un ko Nazar na laga sakain".... Any ways, After going through all that i want to give it another chance. Is there any chance of Support group for lahore. here is my email ID: bbroken-wwings@hotmail.com . I just need your help..... Answer : Salam to all, i am a graduate from islamabad. I am working in InterActive Group as Personal Assistant to ICT Architect. InterActive is basically a software house and deals in the production and deployment of its softwares. I am heading towards my MBA from Hamdard University this year. I am a stutterer from my childhood and due to the fear of stuttering it kept on increasing day by day until in 2008 i started my Speech Therapy in Rawalpindi and i started getting better. One suggestion from my side is that speech therapy is a MUST in stammering cz without it u cannot overcome ur stammering alone. Ur Speech therapist proves to be a Motivational entity for u. I am looking forward for the support group meetings in islamabad, infact m EAGERLY waiting for it...:) Best wishes to All of U!!!
