Answer : Hi Tariq. I can understand the misery caused by stammering. You will need sometime to come over it, because stammering is something that is so strong in you, and has developed over years. So you cannot take control over it all of a sudden. The first things you need to do is to keep in touch with us. Our experience is that when stammerers stay in touch with each other, eventually they start to gain control over their stammering. This might be because your negative feelings towards yourself, self-hate, shame and guilt is reduced when you see/hear other people stammering. As your mind starts switching from negative side to positive side, your confidence level increases, enabling you to feel more confidence for you speech and thus you get control over your speech. The next thing is to try and attend our support group meetings. Support group meetings provide you a chance to overcome the fear of speaking. You speak as much as you want and the way you want, in front of other stammerers, without any interruption and nervousness. Remember, the more you talk, the better you get used to the sport of speaking. Another thing I will suggest is to read literature about stammering, and the support groups that take place all over the world. You can read support group information on the websites of British Stammering Association and International Stuttering Association, links to which are given on this website. We have started support groups in Karachi and soon also in Islamabad. Please tell us where you are located in Pakistan. - Just remember, stammering is not something to be ashamed of. You are just bad at the sport of speaking. If you want to master a sport, you have to play it more and more. Same is the case with your speech. Treat it like a sport. Play with it more and more. Good luck and stay in touch! :)

Answer : Dear Tariq, Thank you so much for posting on our website. I understand all your feelings and fears. I too avoided the telephone, felt my heart racing, my eyes would close, and my facial muscles would tense up. The name is usually the most difficult word for most of us, and also the most embarrassing to be stuck on your name, so my friend, you're definately not alone. :) It's is a gradual process to address all these fears and it's a lot easier to do when you have support. I know that's what helped me. If you would be interested, you could join us for our support group meetings. Which city do you live in? I'm in Karachi, and we held a support group meeting on the 25th and we had a great time! You should join us if you're in the area. We're also holding support group meetings in Islamabad, if you're interested. Please feel free to email me on j.irani@pakistanstammering.org, I'd be happy to share with you what I do to help myself, what books I've read that have been very insightful, and helped me as well, and of course a support group meeting will be very beneficial for you, if you would be open to it. Please keep in touch, Julia

Answer : Hi Tariq. With you in Bahrain, I think the best support we can provide you in through telephone/internet. Anyway, keep in touch and try to feel yourself strong on your speech. Don't try to be fluent. Try to take more deep breaths, after every 4-5 words, take another breath before saying the next 4-5 words. And try to speak slowly and with a deeper tone. You have to change your tone and style of speech if you want to control your speech, as obviously your current way of speaking is not helping you. So when something is not working, you have to change it. Anyway keep in touch and good luck! :)

Answer : Hi Usman, you have just taken your start! Believe me if you are fully determined to control your speech, then nothing can stop you. I understand the situation in which you stammer, that's because you don't expand your comfort zone. When you talk to friend/family etc., you are fluent (as normally all of us are). But in front of strangers you stammer. That's because you are not used to speak to strangers, like other people are. So what you need to do is to give time to your speech. If you can make as many new contacts as possible. Go out on the streets and ask people about different locations/products/shops etc, which includes your feared words. You have to push yourself toward it. Just keep in mind what words you are saying. "Think before you speak" works best for us stammerers. Before saying something, give yourself a 5-6 mins time and think exactly what words you will say in your next sentence. Just expand your comfort zone and keep doing it and you will start to feel better about your speech. Take care and good luck!

Answer : Dear Mohsin, first of all you need to stop thinking that there is problem in your "tongue". It's your fear that freezes you diaphragm in your chest, resulting in blocks. Please read my above post, in addition to that keep in your mind that you have to speak from your chest rather than your tongue and throat. Put pressure only on your chest. This can be done by taking a full breath before speaking a sentence, then say 4-5 words per breath and then release the remaining air in your lungs, then again take a deep breath and speak the next sentence. This will slow down your speech, and you might find it awkward to implement in front of other. But believe me, slow and eleqouent speech is much much better than stammering in front of others and makes you a good speaker - even better than many fluent speakers. I hope you get some of what I have written :) Take care

Answer : Hi Usman, Thanks for posting on our website. I'm sorry I'm responding late - I was travelling the last week and had limited internet access. As far as literature goes, some links I like are: Stuff on Joseph Sheehan : http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/pioneers/jsheehan/jsheehan.html Also John Harrison's book " How to conquer your fears of speaking before people" is a good one. Other than that, Hammad's advice is spot on - for you and Mohsin. We could all use this...and if interviews are tough for you, have fun with them. turn it into a game. Apply for jobs you don't necessarily want, just so you can get some practice with interviews. Interviews can be a really tough challenge, but a challenge is always fun to overcome...so i'd say set a goal to do as many interviews in the next month or two as you can, until interviews are a joke for you! :) Enjoy getting better at the sport of speaking! PS: where are you located? you might like to join our support group meeting in Islamabad or Karachi? Regards, julia

Answer : Hi Mohsin, WOW! You're becoming a lawyer! that is super - I can see you have a great attitude and you havent let your speech stop you from doing the career that interests you, even though it requires a lot of spekaing! Wow! :) You are such an inspiration! Again, Hammad is spot on with the breathing - this is easier to do if you breathe in and out from your mouth instead of your nose. Anthother thing i'd recommend is for you to join www.toastmasters.org it's a club that practices public speaking. It's a great place to get accustomed to speaking before an audience. There are a few clubs in Pakistan - Karachi and Lahore right now, and possibly a new one starting in Islamabad pretty soon - hammad can keep you posted on that. Hope that helps, Julia

Answer : I would just like to appreciate the efforts put in by the team in coming up with this forum, its great! I have always stammered since childhood but mine is not that bad. I am currently emplyed in Shell and doing great. I ahev a daughter and a great family. I cant ask for more. I have really evolved by making myself feel good and not ashamed. Its just a habit you need to get rid of. First i used to avois presentations, public speaking but now i volunteer myself and at times i do strutter but thats fine even the perfect speakers do!! The trick is in knowing yourself, be confident and speak slowly and not unnecessarily. Plz let me know the next forum in Karachi so i may join.
