Hi Zafar
I had a terrible experience with vowels. You need some time to gain control over the vowels. Make a list of vowels. It would be ideal if you have a small article with some vowels in it. Every morning and before going to sleep, read this article as loud as you can, if possible use a mirror. During the reading when the vowel comes, release your breath, pause for about 5 seconds, then take a deep breath and read the vowel along with the new breath. Make your voice deeper on the vowel. Do this exercise daily if possible. Hope it will help. |

Something I'd suggest is try to use vowels any chance you get. Turn it into a game, and treat it like daily vowel practice. Make up some questions you could ask random people on the street maybe, that has a lot of vowels, like "aap ko askari apartments ka rasta maloom hai?" Hehe this is just an example, but you could practice this with random people on the street, or perhaps call someone on the phone and practice. It could be calling the operator and asking "operator say baat karni hai" Then say "oslo call karnay kay charges kya hain?" And treat this excersize as a game, and an effort to get better at vowels. And yes, like Hammad said, pause, take a pull breath before saying it. |

Julia is right, you have to expand your comfort zone - challenge your feared words with more and more strangers. But it depends whether you are comfortable with your vowels in your comfort zone i.e. whether you do not block on vowels in your friends and family. If you do, I suggest you start working on your vowels in your comfort zone first, and when you deal with your vowels in your comfort zone, then start challenging them with strangers. Do work on the exercise I mentioned before. Good Luck! |

May i suggest a technique which i devised mysei=lf and was quite sucessful. I had problem i pronouncing words starting with sound "KHAA" like catastrophy, category, callous..... While pronouncing such words i try not to start the word with "KHAA" or i usually skip first letter "C" and pronounce like atasprophy, atagory, allous. Any one reading this and facing this kind of a problem please please do try it.As it is easy to pronuce words starting with"AAA" then "KHAA". let me also tell that if u try this with such kind of word in running speech listner would not come to judje whether you spoke catastropy or atastropy. I adopted this because usually is is difficult to utter the initial letters of any word. i have improve alot with this technique. I hope it can be a help. Thanks..:)...... |

Hi Rizwan, I appreciate your ideas but I don't really agree with that. You are avoiding something; you are avoiding your challenge words, and I don't think that's good. Because a very important step in your recovery is to challenge your feared words/sounds. You have to get strong on your speech, rather than trying to hide that you stammer. Like I said, there is no shame or guilt if you block on a word. You have every right to take your time, cancel the block, take a breath and say the word again. Another important thing is that everyone have different feared sounds. You probably have trouble with "Kh ..." sounds but many are comfortable with that. Some have trouble with "vowels" sometimes (like myself) but they are strong on "Kh" sounds. So it varies. And let me tell you that when I was in england, I had a hard time with "can" word, like "can i have a coffee?" or "can I have a coke". But I didn't avoid the "can" word. I kept using it until I got control over it. So that's it! You have a fight your stammering rather than hiding it. Hope that I make some sense :) |
