Answer : I would like to share some of the tips with my fellow stammerers that I have learnt through therapy. As one of the uncles mentioned at the support meeting in Karachi that stammering is not a disease which has a cure, it's a condition that stays with oneself. One must learn to try to control it rather than let it take toll of your life :). Some of the tips that I have learnt in therapy and I have learnt through trial and error method. 1)Pause for a moment before speaking. Stay calm, stay positive. 2)Get good hours of sleep, I dont know about you guys but If I don't get good sleep my thoughts and my mind go completely haywire. 3) Don't force words out. Like some people really stress on some letters like S or P or C. Say for instance coffee, dont stress on C so much that it gets hard to say rest of the word out, like Sssnakes( big NO NO) just say the word prolonging some of the vowels i.e snaaakes or choocolates. 4) Lower your tone, speaking loudly has always made me stutter more. 5) Remember to congratulate yourself or give yourself a good treat after a good speaking session. And don't avoid situations take it as a challenge for you to find out how good you are doing to gain control of your speech. Deliberately answer call, just go talk to your maid, driver say about politics a good practice, what will they know hehe ;)

Answer : Nice Tabinda, very nice tips. I specially like the idea in tip no. 3 (Snaakes, cooofee) I will definitely try this tip. About getting a good night sleep, you are absolutely right! If your mind is not fresh stammering can get on to you. However, I don't think I agree with lowering your tone. I'm not sure what you mean exactly by that but as far as I've understood, you probably mean lower your voice while talking. I strongly believe that when we stammer, our diaphragm freezes in chest. In order to keep it moving smoothly, we MUST breath as much as we can, especially after every 5-6 words, we must breath again to say the next ones. Second thing is that if we don't speak loudly (well not THAT loud but at least loud enough to talk in a noisy environment) then we are not really using the power of our chest to speak. I know, I know that usually we all stammer while trying to speak loudly. But that's what we're gonna change! We have to speak at the top of our tone, especially when we are doing daily exercise. That will kinda open our chest. It's like a lock in our chest which prevents us from fully using our chest when we speak. We have to breath more and more and to project our voices through our chest as much as we can (no projection from vocal chords). The reason, I believe, behind stammering more while speaking loudly is that we don't really put pressure on our chests. We put all the pressure on our vocal chords, and that's where the blocking comes. So just try to speak loud enough to make yourself elequont - release your breath before saying something loud, take a NEW breath and make your voice loud and deeper, as it's coming from your chest. - Other that that, all your tips are superb :) Thanks for sharing.

Answer : Thanks Tabinda! I'd like to add a tip: EXPAND YOUR COMFORT ZONES!!! This one's simple to understand but difficult to do, and it's something I feel fluent speakers should also take on! But for a person who stammers this is just as important as breathing! It's one thing to be speaking with control amongst close friends and family, and it's other to maintain that control in a more stressful situation. I'm not saying tomorrow you should go and make a public speech to a 1000 people...but work towards getting there...why not? We know we can do it! If public speaking is your fear, maybe you can join a toast masters club in your area : www.toastmasters.org to practice becoming a good public speaker. You take small steps...but the speaking situation where you feel your heart racing a little...where you're not exactly comfortable...is the one that is your best friend, and you need to revisit until the jitters are gone. It could be talking on the phone, it could be simply talking about the fact that you stutter to other people...that itself isn't comfortable for most of us, and it could be something we work on. So whatever the situation...speaking often in situations that make your heart race and make you want to run the opposite way to avoid, that is exactly the challenge that you need to face up to and JUST DO IT! Like Susan Jeffers says...Feel the fear and do it ANYWAY! because that's the only way you can reduce and eventually remove your fears of speaking in ALL situations. That's my tid bit...make it a GREAT day and set one challenge for yourself...however small it may be, if it feels like a challenge, it's a challenge...and try to live up to that goal. Signing off....J-j-julia!

Answer : hello guys...i think stammering has got something to do with your mental condition may be it is a pyschological disorder,i stutter alot specially when iam tensed our scared...can i use tranquilizers to reduce this stress? can medicine help us out?

Answer : Hi Wasif, You can use tranquilizers, and you probably will see a difference - in the short term. If you ask my opinion, I would strongly advise you against it because it will do the following: 1. It will make you feel dependent on a tranquilizer - and why should anyone be dependent on it, there is no reason to be. 2. It won't empower you to take control of your speech - no matter what the situation, with or without tranquilizers. It won't address your fears and it won't have lasting effects in terms of your speech, and may in fact have long term side effects to your health. I agree with you, that a big part of adult stammering can be psychological and increased during stressful situations. How you can work towards overcoming this is to face your fears, and address that psychological component. Do the things you avoid and you feel your heart pumping while you do it, be it ordering food at a restaurant, talking on the phone, making public speeches, talking to your boss/professor, saying a certain sound, whatever it is - do it over and over again. Do it until it is no longer a fear - and it's in fact boring to do. Working through them in this way will give you long term benefits. That's just my take on it. Julia

Answer : I have a Stuttering Problem since my childhood. As per Mom i have this problem 2-3 years after when i started speaking. On the other side my all brothers stammers too but to the different extent.I read few articles about stammering and they said that this problem could be heriditory too. But what i think is that when i started stammering I compares myself with my elder brother who stammers at that time.(What i think is that when a child started speaking he initially stammers but thats not a big deal to him because he didnt even know that he stammers, which gives him a feeling that he is normal). But in my case i feels that i stammers too thats why i started stammering. One thing more that when my brother started his business ,his stammering problem vanished in few years. He is now stutter on a word out of a million. So it could be because he gained confidence as he got into his business and interacts with different people. But one problem i have, the diaphragm freezing problem on specially Vowels (a,e,i,o,u) .But its random, moslty it happens and sometimes it doesnt. For the tip of good hours of sleep,i dont really agree.because when i sleep late and woke up early when i am too lazy and somehow unconcious I really speaks very good.I never ever stammered at that situation. During my presentation and the starting is like the whole presentation for me.As i stammers as AaAaAaaSalam-u-Alaikum , my name is AaAAAAhmed Ali(diaphragm freezes) while rest is comparatively very easy for me thn.In the starting i got diaphragm freezing problem while during the presentation or any chat i have repetations.Still its cure is like a mystery to me.

Answer : There is not much difference between stammering and stuttering, both are words that are used interchangeably. Stuttering is mostly used in the U.S and Canada while the word 'stammer' is widely used amongst the British.

Answer : There is no cure for stammering. And no magic pill. One can only gain control over their speech, meaning one can only reduce stammering and not completely overcome it. And it doesn't happen over night. It oomes with time and perseverance. So I suggest get out there and face the world and reduce your fear.

Answer : Hello Everyone. I just like to share some of the technique that help me control my stuttering. I took Dr. Martin Shawartz therapy. 1. Each day (about 5 minutes), practice your breathing, take deep breath in and breath out very slowly, this will help you relax and control your stuttering. Controlling your breathing is very important here. 2. Before you say first word, breath in and breath out slowly as you say your first word, DON'T THINK ABOUT THE FIRST WORD. 3. If the first word is monosylable (example my, your, I, what), think of comma after you say your first word. AGAIN, DON'T THINK ABOUT SPEAKING. If you breath correctly, apply the technique, hard word and sound will become easy. 4. If the fist word of sentence is multisyable (example, today, tomorrow, Pakistan, Karachi, Lahore, metronome each syalable. Say like To-day is Friday. To-mo-row is Saturday. Ka-ra-chi is beautiful city. I am not sure if this make any sense, since it is very hard to explain this technique is so few words. But of one apply this, one can control his stuttering. Thanks for taking the time to read this. tariq

Answer : Hey Guys i m irfan , I m a stammerer too but with the passage of time its getting eliminated . but still its remaining . 1st of all I would advise you to remove your stammering habit conciously. but its for your own self not for others . so stop thinkng what other think. infact ppl dont think about if. always observe what goes wrong when you start speach. which muscle get tense or remain tense so the thing you can do is try to tighten that muscle for a little time and then release it . do it several time then u will feel bit improved . try it daily and when u find time. seperate your time for your stammering. other thing is that try to observe a person you like his speach and deeply observe it that how he or she speaks what muscle are calm and what muscle are in use and real tension is there or not. and one thing try to immitate that person. one thing is that surprisingly normal persons mouth muscles are very calm and have no tension in it. the more relax our vocal chords are the more fluent we are... I have few very good relaxation exercises and other things if you ppl are interested let me know. they will change your life

Answer : If we make our immitation power strong enough to copy other style it will work very fast even the results are amazing . try to listen that fluent speach in your mp3 player and listen it again and again. listen it very deeply. two things will always help you to attain your goal of fluency. 1. How much you are dedicated to eliminate the problem . 2. How much time you give daily for your exercises and concious effort. if these two things are present it will pay you much. stammering cases are highly idividual so try to analyse yourself rather sticking on those tricks which dont help. I have one technique for habbit braeking .it is given below

Answer : Break an automatic thought or behavior pattern, and replace it with a resourceful one. Use 35 the Swish pattern for problems such as smoking cessation, anger management, public speaking, nervousness, self-confidence, and self esteem. The Swish pattern is the most famous and frequently applied Neuro Linguistic Programming technique. Step #1. Recognize the automatic reaction Recognize the automatic reaction (the thoughts, feelings or images that occur to you when you think of the challenging situation). Select a replacement image (something inspiring, such as a really good outcome), that helps create a positive state. Imagine yourself in a dissociated image (the third perceptual position, as if you are watching yourself in a movie). Enhance the qualities, such as submodalities, of the scene until it is as compelling as possible. Step #2. Determine the trigger of the negative image Discover what tells your mind to produce the negative image or behavior. Ask yourself what occurs just before this negative or unwanted state begins? This time, you want an associated scene (first position, looking through your own eyes) of what is going on immediately before you engage in the unwanted activity. Remember to think in terms of submodalities to get a detailed sense of the scene. It functions as a trigger for the unresourceful state. Step #3. Place the replacement Put the replacement off in the corner of the negative image. Imagine a small, postagestamp- sized version of your replacement scene in the bottom corner of the negative scene. Step #4. Swish the two images Swish the two images. You will be making both images change simultaneously and with increasing speed. (If you are experienced, you can select two critical submodalities for this.) 36 When you swish, have the negative scene become smaller and shoot off into the distance. At the same time, have the positive replacement image zip in closer and larger, rapidly and completely replacing the negative scene. Imagine it making a whoosh sound as it zips into place. At first, you'll probably do this slowly, taking a few seconds to complete the swish. As you repeat the process, you will be able to do it faster and faster, until you swish nearly instantaneously. Step #5. Repeat Clear your mind after each Swish. This is very important. Do this by thinking of something else, such as your favorite color or what you need to do later. Remember to breathe easily during the swish and the breaks. Do the swish five to seven times, repeating steps three to five each time. You know you have a good outcome when you have some difficulty maintaining the negative image. Step #6. Test Now try to use the limiting thought or behavior again. Notice how hard, if not impossible, it is for you to act it out. Notice that you actually have to think about how to do it first; it is not as automatic as it used to be. If you feel that you could relapse, use the Swish again in a day or two, and again after a week. Additional Advice You can also Swish the two images by using other submodalities instead of the ones used here. THE SWISH PATTERN You could Swish a full color image with a black & white one; you could Swish by going from 3D to Flat or vice versa; you could Swish a snapshot with a movie or any . other contradicting submodalities. 'd1e main key here is to explore and investigate the options. Some people will respond immediately to the Size/Location forms of Swish, and it is known that these are driver submodalities. But others may differ, so keep an open minded, and if the Swish pattern by-the-book does not produce the results you seek, experiment with other driver submodalities. Here is what other NLP trainers had to say about the Swish pattern in the book IINLP - 'd1e New Technology Of Achievemenr' by NLP Comprehensive, Steve Andreas and Charles Faulkner: 37 "The Swish pattern is a very simple and effective way to create an objective and favorable image of yourself that produces immediate results in specific troublesome situations ... you won't know ahead of time exactly what you will do the next time you encounter a situation that is similar to one that used to be troublesome".

Answer : Salam to All....M a stammerer from the childhood, bt at the age of 24(2 years back) my stammering increased terribly and i had to contact the Speech therapist for that, i had sessions with her twice or thrice a week and amazing changes began to appear in my speech which was noticed by everyone. Reading the above comments, breathing exercises are must, secondly EASY ONSET is another step, it simply means that when u start to speak, u should not tighten ur muscles as well as lips, cz by doing this u tend to stop/block the air that goes into the lungs therefore u stutter. Thirdly SLOW RATE OF SPEECH, by speaking slowly and calmly, u can really overcome ur stammering by 90%, and thus u must prolong the vowels. For e.g the word "micro" can be pronounced more easily as "maaaicro" and so on.... These were some points that i wanted to share with u guys, and what i think is that if u have will power and the confidence to face the world, u can overcome ur stammering to a great extent... Wish u all the best guys..:)
