Stammering - a slow, painful and silent suffering.
Hi-hope that you all are in the best of health and spirits! I've been searching for a help group for stammering in Paksitan for a very long time but never found this org's address but now when i finally did i'm glad. Let me introduce myself: I'm Dr Yousuf -29yrs,Muslim, engaged in the training program of ENT-specialization and no need to tell a stutterer also! I've tried so many approaches - books, Cd's and Hynotherapy sessions for its cure but nothing would last long and somehow i revert back to my origingal self - why -this i can't answer. But one thing that i've learned and is for sure is - YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE. Bad and old habbits die hard but they do Die! We have to be patient-very patient indeed and never feel afraid to take chances. I know its easier said than done but this is the only way. People around you can show you the path but it is we who have to walk along that path. I've always wanted someone who'd understand me, who'd stay with me in the most dreadful of times but i guess in the end it is only you and your self. Here, in this part of the world, i dont think so that people are aware of this problem and take this seriously. I think that we should be writing in the print media on a continuous basis, expand our web site, find supporters and organize gathering so that all the stutterers can meet and share their experience and so that the masses too can be educated. Plus we should make available whatever resources we can in the from of e-books, print books, CD's, articles and all, for free use on this forum so that those who can't afford aren't left behind. And as the saying goes: "WHEN YOU FEEL AFRAID & NERVOUS TO DO A THING THEN DO IT BECAUSE THE REAL HARM WHICH YOU MAY RECEIVE IS LESS POIGNANT THAN IT'S EXPECTATIONS & FEAR."

Answer : Dear Dr. Yusuf, thank you so much for such a wonderful post. I was reading your message and suddenly you just stole my words - YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE, and thats basically it! Stammering is mostly a result of negative thinking about yourself, and to change this thinking you have to get continuous support. That's what we are here for. And if you change your perceptions about yourself then your overall personality also changes (at least it hold true for me). If you think you are confident, then you are confident. I'm glad to see that people do think this way. I know there is a serious lack of awareness about stammering in Pakistan. Even if now I tell someone that I did a speech recovery programme in UK and now I am part of a stammering organization just because it helps me, people would say "oh it doesn't matter - we don't feel anything". And that's the mindset that we have to change. Whatever we are doing, we are not doing because others "should not feel anything". We are doing it because we feel good about it, we feel confident about it, we get self-respect from it. And once your shame and guilt about yourself is gone, things start to get better and helps a lot in controlling your stammer.

Answer : I love your attitude Dr. Yusuf! I read a book by Susan Jeffers called "feel the fear and do it anyway" It was really insightful and it applied to my speech as well. She mentions that the "doing" comes before the fear actually goes away. So oftentimes people say, I'll do it when I'm ready. As far as speech goes...I was probably never "ready" to make a public speech, or to come on national television for that matter...but it was by doing it and putting myself in that fearful situation that the fear went away! :) So come on people - Feel the fear and do it anyway! :)
